What is cellular respiration?
The process by which biological fuels are oxidized in the presence of an inorganic electron acceptor, such as oxygen, to produce ATP.
What are the 2 types of cellular respiration?
Aerobic respiration, which uses oxygen
Anaerobic respiration, which does not use oxygen.
Where does glycolysis occur in the cell?
In the cytoplasm.
What is the overall equation for aerobic cellular respiration?
C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2 (oxygen) → 6CO2 (carbon dioxide) + 6H2O (water) + ATP (energy).
What is fermentation?
A metabolic process that occurs in the absence of oxygen where an organic molecule serves as the final electron acceptor.
What are the 2 types of fermentation?
Lactic acid fermentation
Ethanol fermentation.
What is produced in lactic acid fermentation?
Lactic acid and ATP.
What is produced in ethanol fermentation?
Ethanol, carbon dioxide, and ATP.
What is the importance of yeast in fermentation?
It ferments sugars to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide, which is essential in making bread and alcoholic beverages.
How do photosynthesis and cellular (aerobic) respiration relate?
Plants use carbon dioxide produced by animals in photosynthesis, while animals use oxygen produced by plants in aerobic respiration.
What is measured to assess the rate of cellular respiration?
Oxygen consumption or carbon dioxide production.
What happens during the citric acid cycle?
Acetyl-CoA is oxidized to produce ATP, NADH, and FADH2.
Where does the electron transport chain occur?
In the inner mitochondrial membrane.
What laboratory apparatus is used to measure CO2 production in plant respiration?
A bean (seed) respirometer.
What laboratory apparatus is used to measure O2 consumption in animal respiration?
An animal respirometer.
What is the misconception about breathing among plants and animals?
The oversimplification that 'we breathe oxygen but plants breathe carbon dioxide'.
In which 3 processes does glycolysis only occur?
Aerobic Respiration
Alcohol Fermentation
Lactic Acid Fermentation
Which process produces the most ATP?
aerobic cellular respiration
True or False, Animals breath oxygen and plants "breath" carbon dioxide?
True
Yeast is used to make what 3 things?
Bread
Wine
Beer
Which formula(s) are fermentation?
glucose ⇒ ethanol + carbon dioxide
AND
glucose ⇒ lactic acid
