Doel van het Practicum (Objective)

  • Determine the concentration of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) via titration with a standardized 0.10 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution.
  • Gain experience with volumetric equipment: volumetric flask, pipette, pipette pump, burette.

Oriënteren (Orientation)

  • Onderzoeksvraag (Research Question):
    • Determine the concentration of sodium hydroxide by titration with a standardized HCl solution (0.10 mol/L).
    • NaOH solution provided.

Voorbereiden (Preparation)

A - Informatie Verzamelen (Information Gathering) = Vooronderzoek (Preliminary Research)

  • Principle of titration.
  • Principle of acid-base indicators.

B - Benodigdheden (Materials)

  • Materiaal (Equipment):
    • Burette
    • Stand (Statief)
    • Burette clamp (buretklem)
    • Erlenmeyer flask (250 mL)
    • Graduated cylinder (100 mL)
    • Pipette (10 mL)
    • Funnel (Trechter)
    • White card (as background)
  • Stoffen (Chemicals):
    • Phenolphthalein indicator
    • Distilled water
    • NaOH solution (H315-319 P280.1+3-305+351+338)
      • H315: Causes skin irritation.
      • H319: Causes serious eye irritation.
      • P280.1+3: Wear protective gloves and eye protection
      • P305+351+338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
    • HCl solution (0.10 mol/L) - No H- or P-statements provided.

Uitvoeren (Execution)

Werkwijze (Procedure)

  1. Pipette exactly 10 mL of the NaOH solution into an Erlenmeyer flask.
  2. Add a few drops of phenolphthalein indicator and homogenize (mix).
  3. Fill the burette with the 0.10 mol/L HCl solution.
  4. Record the initial burette reading (mL).
  5. Titrate until the solution turns colorless.
  6. Record the final burette reading (mL).
  7. Perform the titration at least three times and calculate the average volume of HCl added.
  8. Drain and rinse the burette with tap water.

Proefopstelling (Experimental Setup)

  • (Drawing of the experimental setup with labeled components is expected here, but cannot be rendered in text).

Berekeningen (Calculations)

  • Calculate the concentration of NaOH in the solution, expressed in mol/L.
  • Calculate the concentration of NaOH in the solution, expressed in m/V% (mass/volume percentage).

Rapporteren - Reflecteren (Reporting - Reflection)

Evalueren Uitvoering (Evaluate Execution)

  • Does the calculated concentration match the value stated on the label? If not, what could be the reasons for the discrepancy? (Possible sources of error should be discussed.)
