Messalina lines 1-13

Messalina novo et quasi insano amore incensa est

Messalina was set ablaze with a new and, as it were, crazy passion

Nam in C. Silium, iuventutis Romanae pulcherrimum, ita exarserat

For she had become so inflamed [with love] for Gaius Silius, the handsomest of the Roman youth

Ut Iuniam Silanam, nobilem feminam, matrimonio eius exturbaret

That she drove out from her marriage Iunia Silana, a noble woman

Liberoque adultero potiretur

And took possession of a wifeless (free) lover

Neque Silius flagitii aut periculi nescius erat

And Silius was not unaware of the disgrace or the danger

Sed intellexit exitium, si abnueret, fore certum

But he understood that if he refused, his death would be certain

Et, si consentiret, nonnullam facinoris celandi spem esse

And [that], if he consented, there was some hope of concealing the crime

Simulque se magna praemia accepturum

And [that] at the same time he would receive large rewards

Igitur placuit neglegere futura praesentibus frui

Therefore it pleased him to ignore the future [and] to enjoy the present

Illa non furtim sed multis cum comitibus ventitat domum

As for her, she keeps coming to the house, not secretly, but with many companions

Postremo servi, liberti, paratus principis

Finally the slaves, freedmen and furnishings of the emperor

Apud adulterum saepe videbantur

Began to be seen often at the adulterer's house

At Claudius matrimonii sui ignarus

But Claudius [was] unaware of [the state of] his marriage

Iam Messalina propter facilitatem adulteriorum

Now Messalina, because of the easiness of the adulteries

Ad novas libidines versa est

Turned to new lusts
