What are the three models discussed
National decision making model
Bureaucratic politics interpretation
Governmental political interpretation
McCarthy’s fear
McCarthy was afraid of communism being spread within the US government. This resulted in the second red scare, persecuting left wing individuals and launching a campaign of fear spreading around the idea of Soviet influence / espionage among the US citizens / government. McCarthy was worried about communism domestically, Dulles was globally.
Pros and cons of Cuban Missile Crisis:
+Avoided nuclear war, put a blemish on Khurschev’s regime
-Khurschev replaced by Brezhnev and Kosygin prolonging the cold war // strengthened Castro’s regime, leading to a continuation of a threatening government in Cuba
How was Castro’s regime strengthened after the Cuban Missile Crisis
Castro longed to make Cuba a player in trades and negotiations. Also, Castro propagated more against the US. Castro used the embargo against the US, implying that US was ready to go to war to prevent Cuba from operating as they wish.
Why did the soviets invade Afghanistan?
They did so due to becoming an oil power, geographic location, and extending influence during the cold war as a proxy-conflict
How was McCarthy a demagogue?
McCarthy was a demagogue because of his over-confrontational (accusations) nature. He played into fear and garnering support as a result of that. At the wheeler speech, he said that communism was already in America
John F. Dulles
Secretary of State
Allen Dulles
Director of CIA
Why did Britain want to overthrow Iran’s democratically elected government?
For oil interests. The angolo-persian oil company was prominent between the two countries (heavily in favor of British). Mosaddeq wanted to nationalize it to make ownership equal.
What does EXCOMM stand for?
Executive committee. Five different responses; do nothing; rally international support; bomb missile installations; invade Cuba; set up naval blockade of Cuba and inspect ships.
Fidel Castro
Cuban dictator. At first, were not too opposed of him. Gained support by being a Guerilla fighter. Also well spoken and knowledgeable in speeches about law and politics.
Alger hiss and Rosenbergs:
People accused and convicted of being spies for Soviets. (Hiss pumpkin papers)
Why did the USSR want to aid Cuba?
The USSR and Cuba were both opposition to the US. When Cuba requested, Russia came to the aid of fellow Communist regime Cuba in defense of their enemy, the US. They both collaborated for economical and military benefits as well.
Bureaucratic / bureaucracy:
Business of running a government / system of government where decisions are made by state officials rather than elected representatives
What role did EXCOMM play in the Cuban Missile Crisis?
EXCOMM played a vital role in advising and overseeing Kennedy’s decisions when it came to the Cuban Missile Crisis
Mossadegh
Iran’s prime minister. Wanted to nationalize the Angolo-persian oil company to make shares equal. Shah’s government exiled him to house arrest after the coup.
How did the Bay of Pigs fail?
The US left the invasion high and dry with little to no air support against Cuba. The US also had tactical and mechanical errors, mistaking seaweed as a treat for example. Mistakes with the US disguising planes as Cuba’s was also a point of error.
National decision making model
Puts ethics at the heart of decision; decisions need to be consistent with principles or standards of behavior. Cost benefit analysis.
Bureaucratic politics interpretation
Developed policies through institutional interests.
Governmental political interpretation
Considers decision making in a government as “bargaining games,” revealing an outcome not shown by the other two models in the Cuban Missile crisis. Also the governments perspective on issues, influenced by factors such as the government’s ideology and goals.
