gerontology
It is a multidisciplinary and specialized area within the various disciplines, such as nursing, psychology, and social work
65 years and above
Elderly refers to people aging?
gerontologic nursing
It is the field of nursing that specializes in the care of the elderly. It includes not only the care of the sick elderly, but also health maintenance, illness prevention, and the promotion of
quality of life to assist the person to grow to an ideal state of health
and well-being.
ageism
It is stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age.
Robert Neil Butler
He coined ageism to describe discrimination against older persons.
senescence
Progressive deterioration of body systems that can increase the risk of mortality as an individual gets older.
social gerontology
It is concerned with the social aspects of aging versus biological or psychological.
geropsychology
It is the branch of psychology concerned with helping elderly persons and their families maintain well-being, overcome problems, and achieve maximum potential during later life
young old age
60-74 years of age are categorized as?
old age
75-84 years of age are categorized as?
old-old age
85-100 years of age are categorized as?
centenarians
Over 100 years of age are categorized as?
wear and tear theory
Deterioration theory proposes that the human body wears out due to use and time. Part of the body, such as cells and tissue eventually wear out from repeated use. Thus, killing the parts and then the whole body.
be aware of stressors and lead a healthy lifestyle
What are the strategies to adapt to wear and tear theory?
endocrine theory
It proposes that events occuring in the hypothalamus & pituitary are
responsible for changes in hormone production that result in the
organism decline.
somatic mutation theory
It proposes that from the time of conception, body cells in our genes continue to produce. As cells divide, there is a chance that some genes will be copied incorrectly (mutation), which then causes problems in the body's functioning related to aging.
entropy
It is the measure of disorder or randomness in a system such as the human body.
law of entropy theory
A system involving a spontaneous process left to itself, it inevitably deteriorates with time until its state of disorder reaches a maximum (death). Disorders arise as people age, creating chaos and promotes deterioration until death.
nutrient deprivation theory
It proposes that vascular changes in aging deprives cells of nutrients and oxygen.
cross-linking theory
It proposes that the accumulation of cross-linked proteins damages cells and tissues, slowing down bodily processes, resulting in aging. Certain proteins in human cells interact randomly and produce
molecules that get linked in such a way as to make the body stiffer
limit sugar intake
What is one management for nutrient deprivation theory?
free radical theory
It invokes macromolecular damage caused by oxygen-derived free radicals (reactive oxygen species or ROS) and reactive nitrogen species or RNS. It proposes that accumulation of oxidative damage causes functional deterioration due to the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products, leading to the suppression of the antioxidative defense system.
original free radical theory
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are irrelevant in certain situations. Oxidative damage by ROS represents only a subtotal of damage. When it accumulates, it gives rise to the accumulation of waste product (accumulative waste theory).
modified free radical theory
It explains that there are hormetic effects for free radical theory.
mild radical effects
These are reversible molecular stress leading to increased longevity.
severe radical effects
These are irreversible molecular damage leading to decreased longevity.
eating more foods rich in antioxidants and cutting calorie intake
What are ways to slow the damage in relation to the free radical theory?
accumulative waste theory
It proposes that molecules damaged by oxidation by-products and damaged mitochondria accumulate in nondividing cells, causing dysfunction, toxicity, aging, and cell death
autophagy
Repair of the cell; cellular organelles and proteins within the cell are broken down and recycled for making new organelles and proteins
intermittent fasting, exercise, certain drugs and supplements
What are ways to increase autophagy?
LEARN model
A tool of cultural assessment in which the gerontological nurse works with Elderly.
Biological aging theory
It is the scientific study of life, genetics
Physiological aging theory
It is the scientific study of life with regards to the functions and mechanism of the living system
Psychosocial aging theory
It is more on being rational in relation to others
Psychological aging theory
It focuses on enhancing the social function of an individual in order to maintain sanity.
