What are the three basic types of chemical bonds?
Ionic Bond, Covalent Bond, Metallic Bond.
What is an Ionic Bond?
A bond formed by the transferring of electrons between a metal and a nonmetal.
What is a Covalent Bond?
A bond formed by the sharing of electrons between two nonmetals.
What does the Octet Rule state?
Atoms bond because it results in a more stable electron configuration with 8 valence electrons.
What do Lewis Symbols represent?
Lewis Symbols use the element's symbol to represent the nucleus and inner electrons, and dots to represent valence electrons.
What is a Single Covalent Bond?
A bond where two atoms share one pair of electrons.
What is a Double Covalent Bond?
A bond where two atoms share two pairs of electrons.
What is a Triple Covalent Bond?
A bond where two atoms share three pairs of electrons.
What is a Resonance Structure?
Two Lewis structures that have the same arrangement of atoms but different arrangements of electrons.
What is Formal Charge?
The charge an atom would have if all the electrons in a covalent bond were shared equally.
What is bond enthalpy?
The energy required to break a bond.
What can affect the stability of a molecule according to the Lewis Structure rules?
Formal charges and resonance structures affect molecule stability.
Which elements typically do not obey the octet rule?
Boron and hyper-valent elements like phosphorus and sulfur.
