Newton’s first law
A body will remain in its state of rest/uniform motion in a straight line unless a net external force acts on it to change that state
Inertia definition
Property of a body that resists changes to its state of motion (mass)
Mass definition
Measure of inertia
Resists change of motion
Newton’s second law
The rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to the net external force acting on it and takes place in the direction of force
Force definition
Rate of change of momentum (F = ma)
Newton’s third law
When two bodies interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on one another
Momentum definition
Product of mass and velocity
Principle of conservation of linear momentum
Total momentum before = total momentum after
No external force / isolated system
