Electrolysis
Electrolysis involves using electricity to break down electrolytes to form elements.
Cell
The source of electrical energy
Electrode
The material connected to the positive or negative end of the cell
Anode
The positive electrode
Cathode
The negative electrode
Anion
The negative ions which are attracted to the anode
Cation
The positive ion attracted to the cathode
Electrolyte
Solution or molten substance which allows ions to move through it
Oxidation
Loss of electrons, occurs at Anode as negatively charged anions need to lose electrons in order to become neutral atoms
Reduction
Gain of electrons, occurs at the cathode as cations have an overal positive charge and gain electrons to become neutral atoms
