Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity.
DSM-II (1968)
The classification in which ADHD was originally referred to as Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood.
DSM-III (1980)
The edition of the DSM that changed the term to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
DSM-III-R (1987)
Revised edition of the DSM that introduced the term Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD).
DSM-IV (1994, 2000)
Fourth version of the DSM which defined Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and specified its subtypes.
DSM-5 (2013)
The current edition of the DSM that reaffirms the diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with additional specifiers.
Predominantly inattentive presentation
A subtype of ADHD where individuals often fail to give close attention, have difficulty sustaining attention, and are easily distracted.
Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation
A subtype of ADHD characterized by excessive fidgeting, difficulty remaining seated, and impulsive behaviors.
Severity ratings for ADHD
Assessments of ADHD severity that can be categorized as mild, moderate, or severe based on the number of symptoms and level of impairment.
Symptom persistence criteria
ADHD symptoms must persist for at least 6 months, appear before age 12, be present in multiple settings, and interfere with functioning.
