Inflammatory Response Phase
Phase one of the healing process, typically lasts from the time of injury to day four.
Proliferative phase
The second phase of healing, lasts from day four to week six.
Phase Three of Healing
The final phase of healing, lasts from week six to two to three years or longer.
Redness
A sign of inflammation due to vasodilation and increased blood flow to the injured area.
Swelling
A sign of inflammation due to fluid accumulation in the injured area.
Phagocytic Cells
Cells that act like Pac-Man, eating up tissue debris in the injured area.
Mast Cells
White blood cells that release chemicals called histamine.
Histamine
A chemical released by mast cells that opens up blood vessels, leading to vasodilation, redness, and swelling.
Progressive Mobilization
Gradual increase in range of motion and strength exercises to promote realignment of collagen along lines of stress.
Wolf's Law
Bone and soft tissue will realign/reorganize according to the stresses and demands placed upon them; the gold standard for rehab.
Edema
Swelling caused by fluid accumulation.
RICE
Acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation which helps to reduce swelling.
