How do the stories in Genesis 3-11 describe the nature of sin?  Explain its effect on man and his various relationships with self, God, others, nature and on small and large scales.

They describe sin as being caused by some sort of temptation, such as envy or jealousy. The first sin caused many changes in Adam and Eve, causing them to feel the need to cover themselves and get separated from God. It also caused people to have to get their own food and started conflicts between people. It also seems to affect people’s life spans, as the people mentioned in the beginning of the Bible live a lot longer than those who are mentioned later on.

Briefly describe what Paul is requesting in his Letter to Philemon.

Paul is requesting Philemon to accept his former slave, Onesimus, back again after he wronged Philemon and fled. Not only that, but he also asks him to accept Onesimus back as a brother, and not as a slave.

Your favorite Biblical Passage Paragraph 1: Identify your favorite biblical passage: Book, chapter verse and title.  Paragraph 2:  Retell the story in your words.  Paragraph 3:  Identify the literary genre of passage and relate the meaning or religious truth behind the passage. Paragraph 4:  Explain how you see the passage as relevant in our world today.  Paragraph 5:  Summation/closing

Paragraph 1: John 8:1-11, no official title, about Jesus stopping people from stoning a woman who committed adultery

Paragraph 2: Woman who committed adultery is brought in, and people say the law of Moses says to stone her. Jesus says, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” They all leave, Jesus asks if anyone condemned her, she says no, he tells her he also doesn’t condemn her and tells her to leave her life of sin

Paragraph 3: It is a narrative and it conveys that we should not be so quick to judge others because we are not free from sin. It is also telling us to show forgiveness toward others

Paragraph 4: It is relevant in our world today because the world is still full of judgement, such as people being bullied and barred from certain jobs due to their appearance. There is also a huge lack of forgiveness, as people will “cancel” others for doing or saying something years ago as if the person could not have changed since then.

Paragraph 5: It’s just a conclusion

Describe Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well.  What is the most important take away you have after carefully and prayerfully studying that story.

Jesus is sitting by a well when a Samaritan woman comes to get a drink. Jesus asks her for a drink, but she asks why a Jew would ask a Samaritan for a drink, as Jews did not associate with Samaritans. He tells her that if she knew who he was, he would have asked God for “living water” and given it to him. He also says that after drinking the water from the well, a person will still become thirsty again, but those who drink the water he gives them will achieve eternal life. He tells her to get her husband and come back, but she says she has no husband, to which he replies that she has had five husbands, before telling her that he is the Messiah. She goes to the town and tells everyone that Jesus is the Messiah; they all see him and become believers.

The “living water” that Jesus was talking about was a metaphor for the Word of God. Jesus was saying that one who receives the Word of God will achieve eternal life in Heaven. This story also demonstrates how faith is spread, with the woman telling her town about what happened and everyone becoming believers in Christ.
