What is a blood vessel?
The network of tubes through which blood is pumped around the body
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Veins, capillaries and arteries
What does a vein do?
Transports deoxygenated blood back to your heart
What does a capillary do?
Delivers 02 and nutrients to cells while waste products, such as CO2 from respiration, are taken away
What does an artery do?
Carries oxygenated blood from heart
Adaptations for blood vessels:
Capillaries | Vein | Artery |
One cell thick for easy diffusion | Wide hole (lumen) to transport more blood | Elastic layer due to high blood pressure |
Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood | Valves to go against gravity and prevent backflow | Oxygenated blood |
Where do arteries carry blood to/away from?
Away from the heart
Where do veins carry blood to/ away from?
Carries blood to the heart
Where do capillaries carry blood to/ away from?
Carries blood between cells
Do arteries carry oxygen rich or oxygen poor blood to cells?
Oxygen rich to cells
Do arteries carry oxygen rich or oxygen poor blood from cells?
Carries oxygen poor blood from cells
What size is each blood vessels’ lumen?
Arteries —> small lumen
Veins —> large lumen
Capillaries —> tiny vessel with narrow lumen
