It has an international port and airport, making it an important center for both regional and international trade
It contains 80% of Nigeria’s industry and many global companies are located there
The rapid population growth is mainly due to rural-urban migration
The majority of people that migrate come from within Nigeria because they want better jobs and incomes are about 4 times higher in Lagos than in many rural areas
International migration for neighbouring countries e.g. Chad also play a big part in the rapid growth
It has become overcrowded, congested and polluted, but as it it situated on the coast there isn’t a lot of space to expand meaning the population density is very high
It has big film industry which produces ‘Nollywood’ films
It also has a thriving music scene which has introduced music styles such as Afrobeat and Afro hip-hop
Western-style fashion is becoming more popular among the richer inhabitants however many people still wear traditional dress
There are around 250 different ethnic groups living in Lagos
About two thirds of the population live in slums
The very rich live in gated communities e.g. Banana Island
There are many festivals that are held throughout the year e.g. Lagos International Jazz Festival
