Atomic Number
Determines the identity of an atom and equals the number of protons and electrons.
Atomic Mass
The sum of protons and neutrons.
Neutrons
Calculated as Mass minus Protons.
Subatomic Particles
Particles that make up an atom: protons (positive charge), neutrons (neutral charge), and electrons (negative charge).
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
Average Atomic Mass
A weighted average mass of all an element's isotopes, closest to the most common isotope.
Periodic Table Arrangement
Elements are arranged by atomic number in the modern periodic table.
Groups/Families
Columns on the periodic table where elements have similar chemical properties due to the same number of valence electrons.
Valence Electrons
Electrons in the outermost energy level that determine an atom's chemical properties.
Bohr Model
A model that shows electrons in specific energy levels around the nucleus.
Lewis Dot Diagrams
Diagrams that depict only valence electrons to show how an atom will bond.
States of Matter
The physical forms in which substances exist: solids, liquids, and gases at room temperature.
