John Locke

A really cool guy who was a leading philosopher of liberty. He wrote the Two Treatises of Government in 1680.

Salutary Neglect

What British governments did, essentially leaving the colonies alone.

Enlightenment

Applied the scientific method of careful investigation based on research and experiment to political and social life.

Deism

A belief that God essentially withdrew after creating the world, leaving it to function according to scientific laws without divine intervention.

The Great Awakening

As the ministers grew worried that expansion was undermining the church, a series of less coordinated, more like local events, called revivals began to happen, calling people back to the church.

Father Junipero Serra

Another cool guy and one of the most controversial figures in California’s early history, founding the California mission in 1769, in San Diego and administering it until he died in 1784.

Seven Year’s War/French and Indian War

The first of the century’s imperial wars to begin in the colonies and the first result in a decisive victory for one combatant. It permanently altered the global balance of power.

Middle Ground

A borderland between the French and British Empires and Indian sovereignty.
