Artificial boundaries
Borders that do not coincide with a division of nationalities desired by the people living there.
Assimilation
To absorb into a cultural tradition.
Berlin Conference
An 1885 meeting in Berlin of leading European powers to discuss the colonization of Africa.
Civil Unrest
Acts of violence between a government and its people or groups (i.e. riots, etc.).
Civil War
A war between citizens of the same country.
Colonialism
The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
Dictatorship
A form of government where one person controls the entire country; harsh rule by a person who rules with total authority.
Imperialism
The process through which one country controls another country.
Indirect Rule
A type of rule used by Europeans in Africa where local chiefs are appointed to enforce the authority of a colonial power.
Infrastructure
Roads, railways, and communication systems.
Missionaries
A person sent to promote Christianity in a foreign country.
Natural Resources
Something that comes from Earth or nature that is useful to humans.
Partitioning
To divide.

The competition between European countries to gain territory and colonies in Africa.
