Gametes
Sex cells produced by the reproductive system; eggs in females and sperm in males.
Fertilization
The process of combining male and female gametes to create offspring.
Testes
Male reproductive organs that produce sperm and hormones like testosterone.
Ovarian Cycle
The cycle that involves the development and release of eggs in females, including the follicular phase and luteal phase.
Spermatogenesis
The process of sperm cell development and maturation, occurring in the seminiferous tubules.
Follicular Phase
Days 1-14 of the ovarian cycle, during which follicles mature and prepare for ovulation.
Ovulation
The release of a mature egg from the ovary, occurring on day 14 of the ovarian cycle.
Luteal Phase
Days 15-28 of the ovarian cycle, characterized by the presence of the corpus luteum and hormone secretion.
Spermatogonium
The initial cell type in spermatogenesis that divides by mitosis to produce primary spermatocytes.
Corpus Luteum
A hormone-secreting structure that develops from a follicle after ovulation.
Hormonal Control
The regulation of reproductive processes by hormones such as FSH, LH, and testosterone.
Cytokinesis
The process during cell division where the cytoplasm divides to form two daughter cells.
Spermatids
The haploid cells that result from meiosis in males and differentiate into mature sperm.
Menstruation
The shedding of the uterine lining, occurring during days 1-5 of the uterine cycle.
Meiosis
A type of cell division that reduces the chromosome number by half, producing haploid gametes.
Primary Follicle
An immature ovarian follicle that contains a primary oocyte.
