Blood is made up of…
…% cells
…% plasma
45% cells
55% plasma
Which is more numerous - erythrocytes or platelets
erythrocytes
Which is larger - erythrocytes or platelets
erythrocytes
Staining of erythrocytes
Stain pink with eosin due to being acidophilic
What do erythrocytes develop from + where
Reticulocytes in bone marrow
Adaptation of erythrocytes and platelets that make them good at their job
Nucleus lost in development, increasing carrying capacity
What do platelets develop from + where
megakaryocytes in blood marrow
Function of erythrocytes
Transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide between respiratory epithelia and tissues
Function of platelets
Important in clotting and repair of damaged blood vessels
What removes platelets
liver
what destroys erythrocytes
spleen and liver
What are leucocytes and examples
white blood cells - granulocytes and granulocytes
Types of granulocytes
neutrophiles
eosinophils
basophils
function of neutrophiles
first line of defence
appearance of neutrophils
multi lobed nucleus
type of cell
neutrophil
function of eosinophils
destroy parasites in tissue
size of red blood cells vs white blood cells
red blood cells are smaller
type of cell
eosinophil
type of cell
basophil
function of basophil
involved in immune response (phagocytosis and release of histamine)
Types of agranulocytes
lymphocytes
monocytes
what type of cell is this?
monocyte
what type of cell is this?
monocyte
function of lymphocytes
involved in cellular and humoral immunity
function of monocytes
Develop into tissue macrophages and dendritic cells when out of the blood, important in inflammation
How do cells look different in sickle cell disease
Cells become deformed
Purple dots found in cells (fragments of nucleus which should have been removed)
How do cells look different in iron deficiency anaemia
Reduced oxygen carrying capacity – cells become pale in centre
Cells become abnormal shape
What is the reticular fibres
mesh layer which cells sit on
Function of bone marrow
Form erythrocytes, leucocytes, platelets,
Destroy erythrocytes
Store iron
Why do macrophages appear black
Macrophages ingest foreign material via phagocytosis. The animal was injected with India Ink (black) before the tissue was sacrificed the macrophages would have ingested the ink and therefore appear black.
Function of neutrophils
first line of cellular defence
