Define statistical infrequency

Statistical way of identifying and explaining abnormal behaviour.

Give an example of statistical infrequency

IQ has a normal distribution, meaning the majority of scores will cluster around the average.

  • 68% of people have an IQ ranging from 85 to 115 - considered normal

  • 2% have a score below 70 - therefore, these individuals are abnormal and liable to be diagnosed with intellectual disability disorder.

Strength - Real world application

E.g. It can be used as a diagnostic tool for example the use of IQ tests to diagnose IDD

Exp: This matters because it shows that the value of statistical infrequency criteria is useful in diagnostic and assessment processes.

Limitiation - Assumes that any abnormal characteristics are considered negative, which isn't always the case.

E.g. Very few people - IQ less than 70 - seen as negative however this contrasts to people who have an IQ of above 150 - also considered abnormal - isn't seen as negative or deemed to require intervention.

Exp: This matters because it means that although statistical infrequency is good in diagnosis, it does not distinguish between desirable and undesirable behaviour.
