Selective Attention

Focusing conscious awareness on a specific stimulus.

Inattentional Blindness

Failing to see visible objects when our attention is directed elsewhere.

Change Blindness

Failing to notice changes in the enviroment; a form of inattentional blindness.

Perceptual Set

A mental predisposition to perceive one thing and not another.

Cocktail Party Affect

The ability to focus one’s listening attention on a single talker among a mixture of conversations and background noises.

Schema

A collection of basic knowledge about a concept or entity that serves as a guide to perception, interpretation, imagination, or problem solving.

Gestalt

The whole is greater than it’s parts.

Figure-Ground Relationship

The organization of the visual fields into objects(figures) that stand out among their surroundings.
