Isaiah son of Amoz is considered "the greatest of the writing prophets." His name literally means "The Lord saves." He prophesied alongside Amos, Hosea and Micah. The Spirit initiated Isaiah's ministry in 740 BC, the year King Uzziah died. (Isaiah 6:1) According to the Jewish tradition (The Ascension of Isaiah), during the "reign of terror" of Manasseh, Isaiah was sawed in half. (Hebrews 11:37) Isaiah was married and had at least two sons, Shear-Jashub (Isaiah 7:3) and Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. (Isaiah 8:3) He lived in Jerusalem, and had his greatest influence under King Hezekiah. (Isaiah 37) Isaiah is also credited with writing a history of the reign of King Uzziah. (2 Chronicles 26:22)
