How Do Family-Social Theorists Explain Abnormal Functioning?:

  • social labels and roles: abnormal functioning can be greatly influennced by the labels and roles assigned to troubled people. When people stray from the norms of society, they could be labled as ‘mentally ill’, when people are viewed in certisan ways, they soon feel enncouraged to act them and pay into this assigned social role.  

  • Social networks: researchers how found ties between deficient social connections and psychological dysfunction.  

  • Family structure and communication: the structure and communication patterns of some families actually force individual members to behave in a way that otherwise seems abnormal

what approaches did famiy-social treatments help spur?

  • group therapy: the therapist meets wtih a group of clients who have similar probs  

  • Family therapy: therapist meets w all members of the faimly, points our problem behaviors and interactions, and helps the whole fam to change its ways.  

  • Couple therapy: focueses on the struture and communication patterns in the relationships  

  • Community treatment: allows clients (particurarly those with severe psychological difficulties) to recieve treatment in familiar social surroundings as they try to recover

three diff types of prevention for community treatment: 

  • Primary prevention: consists of efforts to improve commuity attitudes and policies. It's goal is o prevent psychological disorders altogehter (ex- community workers may sonsult local school board, offer public workshops on stress reduction, or constuct websites on how to cope effectively) 

  • Secondary prevention: consists of indentifying and treating psychological probs in the early stages, before they become serious. Ex: community workers may work with teachers, ministers, or police to help them recognize the early signs of psychological dysfunction and teach them nhow to help people find treament.  

  • Teriary prevention: provide effective treatment to specific persons who have already developed moderate or severe disorders so that they do not become long-term problems.
