What is Barthes’ theory called?
Semiology
What are the key ideas of semiology?
Meaning is communicated through signs which are made up of the signifier and the signified. This is how we get to denotation/connotation!
The meanings created by these myths often reflect dominant values and ideologies.
How can we apply Semiology to the scene that introduces Hopper?
Signifiers: his badge, gun, uniform and empty beer cans. They all communicate meaning that lets us know the kind of character he is, but also suggest values and ideological messages around power and masculinity - he is typically masculine, drinks too much, rough around the edges etc.
How can we apply semiology to the establishing shot of the Wheeler house?
The establishing shot of the Wheeler house includes signifiers such as the suburban architecture, well-kept lawn, and the presence of bicycles. These elements suggest a sense of normalcy, safety, and the idealised American family life; this is the expected social norm - we get the sense that perhaps the Wheelers are ‘too perfect’.
What are the three narrative stages suggested by Todorov’s theory?
Equilibrium, disruption, and new equilibrium.
What is the key use of Todorov’s theory in Media?
Establishing the values and ideologies suggested by the narrative.
