Nationalists
The side in the Spanish Civil War composed of the military, factory and business owners, landowners, and the Catholic Church.
Republicans
The side in the Spanish Civil War composed of the poor, workers, anarchists, liberals, and socialists.
José Antonio Primo de Rivera
Founder and leader of the Falangist party in 1936.
José Calvo Sotelo
Leader of the monarchist party during the Second Republic in 1936.
Alfonso XIII
King of Spain in 1931.
Popular Front
The Republican party of 1936.
International Brigades
People from other countries who fought alongside the Spanish on both sides during the Spanish Civil War.
Red Terror
Name given to all the atrocities committed by the Popular Front.
White Terror
Name given to all the atrocities committed by the Nationalists.
"La Niña Bonita"
The nickname given to the First Republic (1931).
General Francisco Franco
The commander of the Spanish army and the youngest general in Spain at 33 years old.
Guernica
A Basque town bombed by German air forces in 1937.
"Caudillo"
Supreme Leader of Spain after the Spanish Civil War; Francisco Franco.
The Valley of the Fallen (El Valle de los Caídos)
A monument Franco wanted built as a way to close the divide between the right and the left. Built in the Sierra de Guadarrama, in which both leftist prisoners and those that fought with Franco resided.
The Pact of Forgetting (El Pacto de Olvido)
Created after Franco’s death with three parts: amnesia, amnesty, and equidistance. A law created to help Spain move forward in the 20th century.
The Amnesty Law
No one could seek legal punishment for a person who fought in the war or for someone who served under Franco during his dictatorship.
Mass graves
Both sides of the war committed human rights abuses, and when many people were killed, they were buried in shared graves. Identified for reburial through DNA testing.
