Tablets
contains some type filler, such as sugar coated, enteric coated, etc.
Capsules / Caplets
comes in a gelatin container holding medication
Lozenges / Troches
not meant to be swallowed but dissolved in the mouth
Implants
special type of capsule that can be implanted under the skin
Patches
solid pieces of material that hold a specific amount of medication to be released into the skin over time
Liquids
composed of various solutions
Syrups
sugar-based solution w/ medication dissolved in it
Elixirs
alcohol-based or water & alcohol-based solution with medication dissolved in it
Sprays
alcohol-based or water & alcohol-based solution with medication dissolved in it
Inhalants & Aerosols
type of drug solution that can be easily inhaled into the lungs
Emulsions
a mixture of oil & water w/ an emulsifier to bind the two together
Suspensions
a liquid that has very small, solid particles of medication suspended in a base solution, must be shaken before use
Enemas
type of solution used for retention or evacuation
Semisolids
has both qualities of a solid and liquid, but different in composition; mainly meant for topical or local use
Creams
medication that is in part oil & water-base
Lotions
thinner than creams due to base containing more water
Ointments
medication that is in a glycol or oil-base
Gels
medication that is in very viscous (thick liquid)
Pastes
contain a lesser amount of liquid base than solids
Suppositories
used rectally or vaginally
Powders
solid medication that can be sprayed or applied
