What is tissue made up from?
Collection of differentiated cells that have a specialised function or functions
What are the 4 types of tissue
Nervous tissue
support transmission of electrical impulses
Epithelial tissue
*adapted to cover body surfaces internal + external
Muscle tissue
adapted to contract*
Connective tissue
hold other tissues together or as transport medium
What are specialised animal cells
Squamous epithelium
Ciliated epithelium
Cartilage
Muscle
What is squamous epithelium made of?
Squamous epithelial cells
What kind of appearance does squamous epithelium have?
Flat appearance
Thin
One cell thick
What is squamous epithelium esssential for?
During a rapid diffusion across surface
What does squamous epithelium form?
Forms the lining of the lungs
Oxygen diffusion
What is ciliated epithelium
Hair like structures (cilia)
What does ciliated epithelium line?
Lines the trachea causing mucus to be swept away from lungs
What is cartilage and where is it found? What fibres does it contain?
Connective tissue found in outer ear nose and ends of bones
Contains fibres of the proteins elastin and collagen
What is cartilage used for?
Prevents ends of bone rubbbing together
Many fish have whole skeleton made of cartilage not bone
What does muscle need to be able to do?
Needs to contract to move bones then move body
What are the different muscle fibres
Skeletal muscle fibre that is attached to the bonee
Contains Mycrofibrils which have contractile proteins
What covers the surface of a plant?
Epidermis
What is the epidermis usually covered by and what is the role of it?
Waxy cuticle to reduce loss of water
Allows co2 and water vapour and oxygen to diffuse in and out
What is the epidermis
It is where stomata is present
Single layer of closely packed cells
What is the function of xylem tissue and how is it specialised?
What type of tissue is it?
Transports water and minerals through plants
Elongated dead cells - strengthened with lignin (waterproof) and provide structural support
A type of vascular tissue
What is the role of phlegm and how is it specialised?
Transport of organic nutrients from leaves + stems
Have columns of sieve tube cells separated by sieve plates
Type of vascular tissue
