SAT Grammar

When are periods/semicolons used.

1. Between 2 independent clauses
   eg. Max went to the store; he got groceries.
   

2. Before conjunctive adverbs (however, therefore, etc)
   eg. Max is great; however, you are not.
   

When can colons/dashes be used

• Before a list:
  Max has interests in four areas: Engineering, gaming, and science.
  Max has interests in four areas—Engineering, gaming, and science.
  
  Has to come after describing the list.
  Incorrect: Max has interests in: Engineering, gaming, and science.
  

• Also can be used in between sentences
  When max got his degree, he got a job—employers loved him.

What is Comma + FANBOYS

For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
Comma must come before it

Commas and dependant clauses

Commas come before dependant clauses

Non-essential information.

Sentence still makes sense without the information. You need commas or — around it.

eg:
London, which is a very old city, has some modern parts.

Passive voice
