House of Commons
625 Mps elected every 5 yrs, usually belong to a party and the party with the majority of Mps form a government.
House of lords
Not elected in, 92 hereditary peers, 26 bishops and the rest are appointed for their expertise in a specific region.
Monarch
They grant assent to bills ceremonially
Devolved assemblies
Power given to smaller parliaments such as Scottish parliament, northern irish parliament and welsh parliament m.
Bills
Three types
Public- usually issued by the government and affect the country at whole
Private members- these are issues by individual members of parliament
private- bill that affects a specific group or corporation
first reading
Formal procedure, name and aims read out
Second reading
main principles are debated
committee stage
16-50 mps with an interest or knowledge in area scrutinise the small details looking for mistakes and proposing amendments
report stage
Committee reports any amendments to the rest of the house, no vote
Third reading
usually formality unless 6pms request a further debate
other house
the bill is then sent to the other house and changes can be requested, HOL don’t have the final say in the changes but can rely the passing by a year. Stages are repeated throughout each houses
Royal accent
King then accents the bills due to the royal accent act of 1967
