what is the function of connective tissue?
to connect and support the other tissues of the body
how are connective tissues classified?
based on the type of cell and the intercellular matter found between the cells
what is areolar loose connective tissues?
fibroblasts (collagen, elastin), macrophages, and mast cells
what are fibroblasts?
collagen and elastin
what are macrophages?
cells that engulf foreign agents
what are mast cells?
cells that secrete histamine and other chemical mediators of inflammation
what is inflammation?
dilation of blood vessels, permeability of blood vessels, and stimulation of pain fibers
what does erythema mean?
dilation of blood vessels
what is edema?
swelling
what two proteins are secreted by fibroblasts?
collagen and elastin
what is collagen?
a protein fiber that provides strength to a tissue
what is elastin?
a protein fiber that provides elasticity to the tissue
what is adipose tissue?
fat tissue
what is the function of adipose tissue?
provide a reserve for food, insulates against heat loss, supports and protects the organs it encloses
what are three common locations of adipose tissue?
under the skin (subcutaneous fat), around the kidneys and eyeballs, buttocks, and breasts
what are the two subtypes of dense fibrous connective tissue?
regularly arranged and irregularly arranged
what are five places where dense fibrous connective tissue is common?
tendons, ligaments, dura mater, fascia, perichondrium, and periosteum
what does peri mean?
around
how do regularly arranged dense fibrous connective tissue look?
parallel bundles
how do irregularly arranged dense fibrous connective tissues look?
interwoven, running in all directions
what is special about cartilage tissue, unlike other connective tissue?
it is avascular
what are the three subtypes of cartilage?
hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage, and elastic cartilage
what are four locations where hyaline cartilage is found?
long bones of the body, front of the nose, trachea and larynx, surfaces where two bones meet
where is fibrocartilage found?
in between vertebra
where is elastic cartilage found?
the external ear
