week 4 (part 2) - Why do we even have World Wide Web Part 2?

ARPA 

• Went from military, defense purpose – pizza purpose,  daily life purpose

• Pizza Hut - innovator launched electronic store front where you click on logo, can order pizza  (e-commerce site - launched by IBM, Microsoft) 

• Marks a moment where users don’t just get the content → users will send to the their content to the other side. (informtion goes in toher direction)

  • (name, street address, voice phone)

• 10 years - early versions of ecommerce sites: Ebay, amazon, BackRub

• Allow people to sell they have online (more user interaction)

1995 

• Bill Gates wrote important documents “ Tidal Wave Memo” - The internet is most important single development to come along since the IBM PC was introduced 1981. The Internet is a Tidal Wave. it changes the rules.”

  • What rules did it changed? - market rules,  ecommerce, legal rules (itellectal property - what rights u have to access what kinds of books, social norms (dating), system part of socialtechnial system) 

  • Windows - After(web browser) - microsoft explorer/internet exploerer (not the best)

10 years later 

• Architecture part (sociotechnical system) - mobile starts to gain attention, landline subscriptions grow

• 2005, buy album through iTunes, buy just one song from album, 

• You should post “your new story” on Reddit, you thought was interesting

2005 - 2010 The emergence of user-generated content (YT, TWITTER, FB, LINKEDIN, APPLE) 

• YouTube (co-founder) - now billions of videos are now on YT (Karim)

TWITTER

• Jack Dorsey (guy who invented twitter) - quit this software engineer and work at Taxi Cab Company (taxi dispatcher/share updates) - inspired him think of type of communication 

• OAL - instant messager (leave status message (off to Starbucks leaving away from desk) 

  • This is where Twitter starts #dinnertime 

  • Inspired to think to of status update (became of form of communication)

• 2005 - 2006: Facebook

• 2005 - LinkedIn

• 2007: Apple
  

• 2005 - 2006: Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg dorm room) to bigger project

• 2005 - year that was profitable: Linkedln - help professionals, social stuff

• 2007: Apple annouced “Three” new technolgies

  • Widescreen Ipod with touch controls 

  • Reolutionary mobile phone 

  • Breakthrough internet communctator 

  • Ipod, phone, internet

Searchbiablity

• Using PageRank, we are able to order search results so that more important and central Web pages are given preferences. In experiments, this turns out to provide higher-quality search results to users.

• Google uses PageRank - provided serarch results that was better 

• if amount of links that connect you to one website (amount of connections indicates importance)
