Democracy
A system of government where the citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives.
Representative Democracy
A type of democracy where elected officials represent a group of people.
Coalition
An alliance formed between two or more political parties to achieve a common goal.
Electorate
A geographical area represented by a member of parliament; also refers to the group of voters residing in this area.
Ballot Paper
A piece of paper on which a voter indicates their choice in an election.
‘First past the post’
An electoral system where the candidate with the most votes wins, regardless of whether they achieve a majority.
Redistribution (votes)
The process of redrawing electoral district boundaries to reflect changes in population.
Policies
Formal statements of principles and objectives that guide decisions and actions in governance.
Jury
A group of citizens sworn to give a verdict in a legal case based on evidence presented in court.
Rule of Law
The principle that all individuals and institutions are subject to and accountable to the law.
Common Law
Law derived from custom and judicial precedent rather than statutes.
Statute Law
Law enacted by a legislative body, such as Parliament.
