Perimeter
The distance around the outside edge of a two‑dimensional shape; described as the rim.
Rim
The edge or border of a shape; used colloquially as a synonym for perimeter.
Rectangle
A parallelogram with four right angles; opposite sides are equal.
Parallelogram
A four‑sided figure with opposite sides parallel; like a rectangle that has been tilted.
Length
The longer dimension of a rectangle or parallelogram; one of the sides.
Width
The shorter dimension of a rectangle or parallelogram; the other side.
Multiplication
An arithmetic operation representing repeated addition; combining equal groups.
Times symbol (×)
The multiplication symbol used to indicate a product.
Dot (·) as multiplication symbol
A dot used as a multiplication sign, common in algebra and higher math.
Repeated addition
Adding the same number multiple times; the concept behind multiplication.
Number line model
A visual way to model multiplication by making successive jumps of the size of a factor.
Groups model
Model multiplication as a number of groups of a given size.
Commutative property (multiplication)
Changing the order of the factors does not change the product (ab = ba).
Associative property (multiplication)
Grouping of factors does not change the product ((ab)c = a(bc)).
Additive identity
0; adding zero to a number leaves it unchanged.
Multiplicative identity
1; multiplying a number by one leaves it unchanged.
Zero property of multiplication
Any number multiplied by zero equals zero.
Expanded notation
Writing numbers in expanded form (place-value components) to multiply step by step.
Partial products
The individual products obtained when multiplying parts of numbers; then added together.
Lattice method
A grid-based multiplication method using a rectangle and diagonals to sum partial products.
Diagonal sums
The sums along diagonals in the lattice method, which may require regrouping (carrying).
Carrying
Regrouping tens or higher to the next left place when a sum exceeds 9.
