Elements of Dance
are the
foundational concepts and
vocabulary that help students
develop movement skills and
understand dance as an artistic
practice.
Bodily Shapes, Action, Space, Time, Energy
5 Elements of Dance
Bodily Shapes
refers to how the
entire body is molded in
space on the configuration
of body parts.
Bodily Shapes
The body
can be rounded, angular,
or a combination of two.
Other body shapes can be
from wide to narrow and
from high to low. They can
be symmetrical and
asymmetrical.
Group Shapes
a group of
dancers perform
movements in different.
Group Shapes
They are
arranged in ways that are
wide. narrow, rounded,
angular, symmetrical, or
asymmetrical and are
viewed together as a total
picture or arrangement
within.
Action
Any human movement included in
the act of dancing— it can include
dance steps, facial movements,
partner lifts, gestures, and even
everyday movements such as

improvised, meaning that the
dancers make it up "on the
spot"
locomotor
movement
Movement that
travels through space
axial movement
movement which
occurs in one spot.
Space

performers occupy and
where they move.
spatial elements
space is divided into four different aspects that are known as
Direction, Size, Level, Focus
The Spatial Elements
Direction
dance movement can travel in any___ The
performers can go forward,
side, backward, diagonal,
circular and so on.
Size
movements can be
varied by doing larger or smaller
actions.
Level
movements can be
done in a high, medium, or low ____
Focus
performers may
change their ____ by looking at
different directions.
Time
Keyword : When?
Time
Human
movement is naturally
rhythmic in the broad sense
that we alternate activity and
rest.
Time
Breath and waves are
examples of rhythms in
nature that repeat, but not as
consistently as in a metered
rhythm.
Energy
The movements here
propelled by _____ or force.
Energy
Dance uses
different _____, and a
varied use of theses
minimizes the monotony of
the movements in a
performance.
force
can either initiate or
stop an action.
Sustained, Percussive, Vibratory, Swinging, Suspended, Collapsing
six
qualities of dance energies
Sustained
movements are done smoothly,
continuously, and with flow. Control does not have
a clear beginning and ending.
Percussive
movements are explosive or sharp
in contrast with sustained movement. They are
accented with thrust of energy. They have clear
beginning and ending.
Vibratory
movements consists of trembling or
shaking. A faster version or percussive movements
that produce a jittery effect.
Swinging
movements trace a curved line or an
arc in space. The movements are released and
giving in to gravity on the downward part of the
motion, followed by an upward application of
energy.
Suspended
movements are perched in space
or hanging on air, holding a raised leg in any
direction is an example
Collapsing
movements are released in tennis
and gradually or abruptly giving in to gravity.
Letting the body descend to the floor.
slow collapse
can be described as a melting or oozing
action in a downward direction
Fitness
defined as a condition in
which an individual has enough
energy to avoid fatigue and enjoy
life.
Health-Related Fitness
Focuses on factors that promote
optimum health and prevent the
onset of disease and problems
associated with inactivity.
Body composition
Ratio of mass and fat free mass
Cardiorespiratory Endurance
also called as
cardiorespiratory endurance or aerobic
fitness refers to ability of body to
efficiently and effectively intake oxygen
and deliver it to your body's tissues by
way of the heart, lungs, arteries, vessels,
and veins.
Cardiorespiratory Endurance
ex. long distance walk, swimming
Working Heart Rate
heart rate after 3 minute step test
Resting Heart Rate
heart rate before 3 minute step test
Flexibility
is the ability of a joint or series
of joints to move through an unrestricted,
pain free range of motion.
Flexibility
ex. Zipper test
Muscular Strength
refers to your ability to move and lift
objects. It’s measured by how much force
you can exert and how much weight you
can lift for a short period of time.
Muscular Endurance
is the ability of a particular muscle group
to exert force, continuously and
repetitively, over a period of time.
Skill-Related Fitness
It is the ability to perform during games
and sports, also called performance
fitness. Are more
relevant to certain athletes.
Agility
Ability to move quickly and to easily change in direction
Agility
ex. hexagon jump test
Balance
ability of the body position to remain upright
Coordination
is the ability to execute smooth, accurate,
controlled motor responses (optimal
interaction of muscle function). It is
characterized by appropriate speed,
distance, direction, timing, and muscular
tension.
Coordination
ex. jump rope drills
Power
as the ability to exert a maximal
force in as short a time as possible (Wood,
2010). Combination of speed and
strength.
Power
ex. high jump
Reaction Time
refers to how quickly you can respond to
an external stimulus. Hinges
heavily on your mind-body connection.
Speed
refers to the distance traveled per unit of
time. It is how fast an object is moving.
