POET
the author of the poem.
SPEAKER
The narrator” of the poem.
FORM
the appearance of the words on the page
LINE
a group of words together on one line of the poem
STANZA
a grouped set of lines in a poem
Couplet
a stanza consisting of two lines
Quatrain
a stanza consisting of four lines
Alliteration
the repetition of consonants in the beginning of words.
Allusion
A reference to something from history of literature.
Metaphor
a comparison between two different things without using 'like' or 'as.'
Simile
a comparison between two different things using 'like' or 'as.'
Symbol
One thing that stands for itself and some other idea.
Tone
The emotional attitude toward the reader or toward the subject implied by a literary work.
Personification
Giving human characteristics to inhuman objects or animals.
Imagery
Creating pictures for the senses
RHYME SCHEME
a pattern of rhyme (usually end rhyme, but not
always).
END RHYME
A word at the end of one line rhymes with a word at the end of another line
INTERNAL RHYME
A word inside a line rhymes with another word on the same line.
LYRIC
A short poem, usually written in first person point of view
NARRATIVE POEMS
A poem that tells a story
FREE VERSE POETRY
does NOT have any repeating patterns
BLANK VERSE POETRY
Written in lines of iambic pentameter,
but does NOT use end rhyme.
Repetition
Repeated words or phrases, duh.
