AIDS

cancer of the bone marrow; inhibits manufacturing of red and white blood cells and platelets
diabetes
metabolic disease where body is unable to produce enough insulin; results in elevated blood sugar
type II diabetes
form of diabetes in which the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or cells ignore insulin
breast cancer
type of cancerous growth in breast tissue
nervous system
network of nerves and cells in the body that carry messages to and from the brain
gangliosidosis
disorder that causes skeletal disorders and mental retardation
anticoagulants
substances that prevent the clotting of blood
polio
highly contagious viral infection that leads to paralysis, breathing problems, or death
HIV
human immunodeficiency virus; causes AIDS
hepatitis
inflammation of the liver. Has 3 strands:
A- acute infection transmitted through fecal contamination of infected animals; has vaccine
B- more serious infections transmitted through bodily fluids; has vaccine
C- similar to B; has NO vaccine
malaria
life-threatening blood disease caused by parasites transmitted by mosquito bites
acute respiratory disease
infection that interrupts normal breathing; often leads to viral infection of respiratory system
xenograft
transplant of living tissue from one species to another
CAT scan
x-ray test that makes cross sectional images of the body
sharps
devices with sharp points/edges that can puncture or cut skin
zoonotic disease
diseases that can spread from animal and people
SDS

medical waste
any solid waste generated in the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of humans or animals
regulated medical waste (RMW)
a.k.a. infectious waste, biomedical waste
waste that is potentially infectious or requires certain percautions

non-living objects carrying an infectious agent and can spread disease
vector
living thing that helps pass on diseases or infections
