Diuretics side effects (all)

Dehydration, hyponatremia (low sodium), hypokalemia (low potassium)

Thiazide diuretics

Hypokalemia, hyperuricemia, sulfa allergy

Hydrochlorothiazide

Elevates blood glucose; People with DM should not take

Antithrombotics

Excessive bleeding; Should NOT take with any other 'blood thinner' medication

Anticoagulants (all)

High risk; Can cause fatal bleeding; DO NOT take with any other 'blood thinner' medication (NSAIDs/aspirin/etc.) - increases risk of fatal bleeding

Warfarin/coumadin

High risk; Can cause fatal bleeding; Must monitor PT/INR to determine medication dosages

PDE-5 Inhibitors (for E.D.)

DO NOT take with nitrates - can cause severe hypotension; Alert MD for erection lasting more than 4 hours

Nitroglycerin (Nitrostat)

Should avoid heat and be stored with a tightly sealed lid; will evaporate when exposed to air; readily undergoes absorption to many soft plastics

Beta-adrenergic blockers (Beta blockers)

Can cause bronchoconstriction; Do not give to someone with asthma/COPD

ACE Inhibitor

Dry Cough

Alpha-adrenergic blockers (Alpha blockers)

Dizziness, hypotension, hyperkalemia

Alpha-2 receptor agonist

Can cause 'rebound hypertension' when discontinued abruptly
