What is contamination ?
It is the unwanted presence of materials containing radioactive atoms on other materials
When is a substance radioactive ?
If it contains radioactive atoms that emit radiation
When does contamination occur ?
When a radioactive isotopes gets onto a material where it should not be
What is this due to ?
This is often due to a radioactive leak
What happens as a result of this ?
The small amount of the isotope in the contaminated areas will emit radiation and the material become radioactive
What is irradiation ?
It is the process of exposing a material to alpha, beta or gamma radiation
What does irradiating a material do ?
It does not make that material radioactive
What can irradiation be used for ?
It can be used as a method of sterilisation
