Fort Sumter
A U.S. military fort in South Carolina where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in April 1861.
Lincoln's Strategy to Avoid War
President Lincoln's approach to prevent war by not attacking the South and sending only supplies (not weapons) to Fort Sumter, hoping the South would not fire.

Habeas Corpus
A constitutional protection that people cannot be jailed without a reason or a trial.

A Confederate general known for standing firm in battle; nickname 'Stonewall' earned at Bull Run.
George B. McClellan
A Union general who trained the army well but was often too slow to attack; Lincoln replaced him.
Clara Barton
A nurse during the Civil War who founded the American Red Cross and cared for wounded soldiers.

Women served as nurses, spies, factory workers, farmers; some disguised themselves as men to fight.
