Anechoic

Neither producing nor possessing echoes.

Echogenicity

Characteristic of tissue to reflect sound waves & produce echoes (grayscale).

Hypoechoic

Less echogenic.

Isoechoic

Tissues having the same echogenicity, making it difficult to differentiate from one another.

M-mode

Presentation of moving structures along a single line in the ultrasound beam, displayed as time vs. distance from the transducer.

Decubitis

Lying on a horizontal surface; patient is lying on their side (e.g., left lateral decubitis: patient lies on the left side with the right side up).

Prone

Lying face downward; patient lies on their stomach.

Angi-

Relating to vessels.

Arthr-

Relating to joints.

Chole, Chol-

Relating to bile.

Cyst-

Relating to the urinary bladder, cysts, or fluid-filled sacs.

Enter-

Relating to the small intestine.

Lith-

Relating to stones.

Nephr-

Relating to the kidney.

Neur-

Relating to nerves or the nervous system.

Ab-

Prefix meaning absent, deficient, or away from.

Contra-

Prefix meaning opposite.

Dys-

Prefix meaning difficult or painful.

Ecto-

Prefix meaning outside.

Endo-

Prefix meaning within.

Hyper-

Prefix meaning above or greater concentration.

Hypo-

Prefix meaning below or lesser concentration.

Olig-

Prefix meaning too little or too few.

-genic

Suffix meaning origin.

-osis

Suffix meaning abnormal condition or process.

Suffix meaning abnormality.
