Mitosis
process of cell duplication, process that produces every cells (minus sex cells)
Chromosomes
inside the nucleus, carries DNA/genetic information
chromatid
one half of two identical pieces of a chromosome
centromere
links a pair of chromatids together
centriole
produces spindle fibers during mitosis (only animal cells)
Spindle fibers
protein structure helps separate chromosomes from each other during mitosis
Interphase
nucleus is present
DNA is in the form of chromatin
Centrioles are in pairs
Replicate chromatids into chromosomes
Prophase
nucleus disappears
chromosomes form
centrioles are in pairs
replicate chromatids into chromosomes
Metaphase
chromosomes lined up down the middle of the cell
centrioles attach spindle fibers to centromeres
Anaphase
chromosomes pulled apart into chromatids
Telophase
cell membrane pinches in
nucleus reforms
produces 2 new cells with chromatids
Asexual reproduction
only involves 1 parent cell, mitosis, genetically identical, quick, no variation
Binary fission
simplest form of asexual reproduction, parent organism divides into 2 equal parts
Budding
parent organism divides into two unequal size parts, a new organism is created as a small growth or bud on the parent, buds break off
Spore formation
small specialized cells that contains a nucleus and cytoplasm surrounded by a thick outside wall, under right condition the spore can rise to a new organism
Regenertaion
the ability to regrow a lost or damaged body part(s), more complex = less capability to re-grow parts
Bulb
short underground stem surrounded by thick leaves
Corm
similar to bulbs just without leaves, underground stems
Tuber
enlarged part of an underground stems that contains stored food
Runner
horizontal stem above the ground with buds, bub will form root if it touches the ground and stems
Rhizome
horizontal stem that grows underground, upper portion forms node (node forms bubs that will then form a new plant), lower portion will form roots
