Homogeneous mixture
A mixture that is thoroughly mixed throughout, showing no differences at a macroscopic level.
Solute
The substance that is being dissolved in a solution.
Solvent
The substance in which the solute is dissolved.
Aqueous solution
A solution in which water is the solvent.
Endothermic process
A process that absorbs energy from the surroundings.
Exothermic process
A process that releases energy to the surroundings.
Entropy
A measure of the energy dispersal in a system, often driving spontaneous mixing.
'Like dissolves like'
The principle stating that polar substances dissolve well in polar solvents, and nonpolar substances dissolve well in nonpolar solvents.
Solid solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more solids.
Gas-liquid solution
A solution where a gas is dissolved in a liquid, such as carbonated beverages.
Liquid-liquid solution
A solution where one liquid is dissolved in another liquid, such as alcohol in water.
Gas-gas solution
A homogeneous mixture of gases, exemplified by air.
