  1. Aggravated or first-degree murder 

    —> Intentional unlawful killing of one human being to another 

  2. Second-degree murder (voluntary manslaughter) 

    —> Intentional killing of another human being without premeditation and deliberation 

  3. Involuntary manslaughter 

    —> When an unintentional killing results from a reckless act (driving under the influence) 

  4. Negligent manslaughter 

    —> When a death arises from some negligent act that carries a substantial risk of the death of others (driving an unsafe vehicle)

4) insane or evil geniuses- most fit the criteria for psychopathy or antisocial personality disorder; few qualify as mentally ill or legally insane; IQ varies considerably 

5) Want to get caught- thoroughly plans it; feels they won't be caught

6) dysfunctional loners- most have families, home and employments; hide in plain sight 

  1. Visionary serial killer: killer who feels impelled to commit murder by visions or “voices in my head” 

  2. Mission- oriented serial killer: mission to kill certain kinds of people

  3. hedonistic serial killer: killer who kills for the pure thrill and joy of it 

  4. power/ control serial killer: gain most satisfaction from exercising complete power over his victims
