Experimental methodology
A systematic approach using controlled conditions to test the relationship between independent and dependent variables. Explains behavior
Hypothesis
A proposed statement that predicts a causal relationship between variables to be tested.
Independent variable
The variable deliberately manipulated to observe its effect on the dependent variable.
Dependent variable
The variable measured to assess the effect of manipulating the independent variable.
Controlled conditions
Conditions kept constant to isolate the effect of the independent variable.
Non-experimental methodologies
Research designs that do not involve manipulating variables, used when experiments are not possible or ethical. Describes behavior
Case studies
group of people or person examined through a event to provide info on a specific topic.
Correlational studies
Researchers test 2 variables to see how strong the relationship is.
Meta-analysis
Takes múltiple studies results to provide a claim on one topic.
Naturalistic observation
Watching people in the natural world to collect data so there is little to no interfernce
Hawthorne effect
participants change behavior because they know theyre being studied.
Third-variable problem (confounding variable)
a third variable that is uncontrollable happens when correlation studies don’t go as planned.
Causation
cause and effect. Correlation doesn’t cause causation.
