Tawhid is the oneness of Allah, there is no other god but Allah and he has no partners or equals. Its literal definition is “unity” or “only one”. For example, the Qur’an states “There is no God but Allah”.

Salat is the second pillar of Islam, and it is formal and organised prayer that happens five times daily. For example, Fajr at dawn and Zuhr at noon.

Shahadah is the first of the five pillars of Islam, meaning declaration of faith. For example, the Qur’an states “There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet.”

If something is Halal, it is permitted or allowed. It is often used in relation to food rules. Examples of halal food include vegetables or most seafood.

Shirk is the worst sin a Muslim can commit, it is unforgivable. It is the act of worshipping something other than Allah or likening something equal to him. An example would be using pictures to represent him.

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam, it is giving 2.5% of your yearly income to charity. It is a mandatory form of cleansing your wealth, and Allah will praise this.

Sadaqah is voluntary work, or service to others. Example of this include helping others with tasks or financial donations to people in need.

The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam, meaning “reciting”. It is the most sacred scripture as it is believed to be of the highest authority. An example of its contents is “Allah is with people who show patience”.

Adman is the call to prayer five times a day, recited by the muezzin from the minaret. For example, it includes the words “Allahu Akbar” meaning “God is Great”.

The Hadith (meaning “discussion” or “speech”) is a book that contains the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad recorded by his family and friends. An example of its contents is “worship Allah alone”

Akhira is an Islamic term for a belief in life after death. For example, Jannah is the afterlife for those who do good in life and Jahannam is for people reject the teachings of the Qur’an.

Al-qadr is the Islamic belief in predestination, as Allah knows everything that will happen in the future. An example is that difficult situations are believed to be part of Allah’s plan.

A burka is a loose garment worn by Muslim women that covers the entire body excluding the eyes. For example, they are commonly worn in the Middle East.

A prophet is a person regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God. For example, “Muhammed is [Allah’s] prophet”.

Muhammad is the founder of Islam, and Allah’s prophet. His life was recorded in the Hadith, for example, it includes “worship Allah alone”
