Catabolism

The breakdown of complex chemicals into simpler components.

Anabolism

The building up of complex substances from smaller, simpler components.

Responsiveness

The ability of the body to detect and respond to changes.

Growth

The increase in body size due to cell size or number increase.

Differentiation

The process whereby unspecialized cells develop into specialized cells.

Reproduction

The formation of new cells for tissue growth, repair, or replacement.

Medial

Positioned near the centerline of the body.

Lateral

Situated toward the sides of the body.

Superior

Located above another structure.

Inferior

Found below a specific point of reference.

Contralateral

Occurring on the opposite side of a paired structure.

Anterior

Facing the front of the body or structure.

Posterior

Oriented toward the back portion of the body.

Superficial

Lying closer to the surface of the body.

Deep

Situated farther within the body.

Sagittal Plane

A plane dividing the body into right and left sections.

Frontal Plane

A plane dividing the body into anterior and posterior portions.

Transverse Plane

A plane dividing the body into upper and lower portions.

Dorsal Cavity

The cavity housing the brain and spinal cord.

Ventral Cavity

The larger body cavity that includes the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.

Cranial Cavity

The cavity that houses the brain.

Spinal Cavity

The cavity enclosing the spinal cord.

Thoracic Cavity

The superior subdivision of the anterior cavity containing the lungs and heart.

Abdominopelvic Cavity

The largest body cavity housing digestive and reproductive organs.
