Cell membrane (plasma membrane)
phospholipid bilayer that surrounds all cells and regulates what enters and leaves the cell
Cell Wall
A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the plant cell
Nucleus
A part of the cell containing DNA and is the control center of the cell.
Ribosomes
Makes proteins for the cell
Cytoplasm
A jellylike fluid inside the cell; keeps organelles in place
Vesicle
A membrane bound sac that contains materials involved in transport of proteins throughout the cell.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Covered with ribosomes; makes proteins
Golgi Apparatus/Body
Works with ER and vesicles; Sort, Packages and Ships Proteins
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Makes lipids
Vacuole
Cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates
Lysosome
Cell organelle filled with enzymes needed to break down certain materials in the cell
Chloroplast
An organelle found in plant and algae cells filled with chlorophyll and where photosynthesis occurs
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of cellular respiration (energy) production; turns food into energy
Cytoskeleton
A network of fibers that holds the cell together, helps the cell to keep its shape, and aids in movement
Cilia
Many Hair like projections that extend from the plasma membrane and are used for movement
Flagella
2-3 long hair like projections used for movement
Centriole
Cell organelle that aids in cell division in animal cells only
Nucleolus
Found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes
Central Vacuole
A large vacuole that rests at the center of most plant cells and is filled with a solution that contains a high concentration of solutes.
Prokaryotic
An organism whose cells do not have an enclosed nucleus, such as bacteria.
Eukaryotic
Cell with a nucleus (surrounded by its own membrane) and other internal organelles.
1. All living things are made of cells
2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
3. New cells are produced from existing cells
What is the cell Theory?
