What were the consequences of the Spanish civil war?

  • Nationalists win and rule as dictatorship for 36 years

  • Hitler improves his capabilities (e.g air force)

  • Gb + Fr appear weak as they haven’t stopped General Franco

  • New axis alliance between Italy and Germany (which is a sandwich between Austria)

  • The USSR became increasingly suspicious of Britain and France because of their reluctance to get involved

  • Guernica was a taster of war in the 1930s and Gb + Fr didn’t do anything in fear they would have that happen to them.

  • Hitler’s actions in the war alarmed Britain and they began to increase money to their armed forces

  • Encourages Hitler that Britain and France wouldn’t do anything if he broke more of the TofV

  • German airforce bombing civilians in North Spain (Guernica) in favour of General Franco

  • Guernica is then used to reference civilian bombings as well as Picasso’s art was a memorial tribute to Guernica
