Tuberculosis (TB)
Caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Diagnosis of TB
Chest x-ray, tuberculin skin test
Transmission of TB
Airborne
Persistence of TB bacteria
Bacteria persist in host cells in a latent (inactive) state in alveolar macrophages
Latent vs. Active TB
Latent TB is in alveolar macrophages; weakened immune system increases risk of active TB
Treatment for TB
Anti-tubercular drugs (rifampin, isoniazid, ethambutol). Treatment can last from 6-9 months
Prevention of TB
BCG vaccine (available in high prevalence countries)
