Alliteration
Use of the same consonant at the beginning of each word
(Ex: Campo Cougars Can't be beat)
Allusion
Brief reference to a person, place, event, thing, etc(assumed that reader familiar with thing)
Ex: To my dog, our neighborhood park is the Garden of Eden
Analogy
Extended comparison between 2 things usually thought of as different; rhetorical device.
Assonance
Reptition of vowel sounds without the same consonants in a series of words
Ex: The long forgotten trail of lost souls, "aw" sound repeated in long, -gotten, lost.
Colloquialism
Word/expression that is commonplace in specific language, geographic region, historical era. Provide personality and authenticity to characters or dialogue in literary work.
Complex sentence
sentence with 1 independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Compound sentence
Sentence with 2 or more independent clauses joined by: a coordinating conjunction, a semi-colon, or a conjunctive adverb.
Connotation
Idea/feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal/primary feeling
Coordination
Act of connecting two ideas of equal weights or importance. Use transitional words to connect clauses/phrases to show equal weight.
Declarative sentence
Used to make a statement - as opposed to imperative, interrogative, and exclamative.
Ex: they went to the park
Deduction
The act of drawing logical conclusions based on info given in a text, using one's personal experiences and knowledge of the world.
Denotation
Literal/primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests.
Elegy
poem/song expressing sorrow, espcially for dead person.
Epigram
Concise poem dealing satirically with a single thought, a terse, witty and often paradoxical saying.
Ex: (I can resist everything but temptation)
Figure of speech
Word/phrase that intentionally deviates from ordinary language use in order to produce a rhetorical effect.
Fragment
A part of a sentence (incomplete)
Ex: Because he was jealous
Hyperbole
Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally
Ex: I've told you a million times to stop talking!
Irony
Figure of speech in which a speaker says the opposite of what is expected or says something but means something very different.
Ex: I would NEVER go to hoco with you! (pls ask me out im single fr)
Metaphor (and Simile)
Metaphor: Direct comparison of 2 things
Ex: a school is a zoo
Simile: comparison using "like or "as"
Ex: a school is like a zoo
Parody
Form of humor that mimics a specific work, style, person, etc. in an exaggerated way. Its primary purpose is to entertain.
Satire
Form of humor that uses irony, sacrasm, and parody to criticize or expose the flaws or absurdities of individuals, institutions, or society as a whole. often employs humor as a means to deliver a social or political message.
Simple Sentence
A sentence that consists of one independent clause and has no dependent clauses.
Ex: I ran
Subordinate Clause
A clause that cannot stand alone because it is not a complete thought (also known as a dependent clause).
Subordination
Connecting two clauses or phrases in such a way that shows one part is more important than the other. Note: you can use various transitional words to connect clauses or phrases to show subordination.
Tone
The attitude of a writer towards their subject. The tone can be created through various means, such as diction (choice of verbs, adjectives, etc.) and/or use of irony, figures of speech and so on.
