ABA
Exposition (A) 8m theme (usually a period, sometimes a sentence or a hybrid)) ending with a PAC in the home key or in the subordinate key (HC in the home key?). It emphasizes tonic harmony.
Contrasting middle (B) achieves contrast through harmonic-tonal and phrase-structural means, containing a looser organization than that in A. It tends to emphasize dominant harmony (standing on the dominant), and/or ends with a HC in the home key.
Recapitulation (A’) brings back the opening (the initial basic idea) in the context of the tonic key, closing with a PAC, adjusting the material if the opening A ended in the subordinate key. It may compress the opening to a single phrase (usually, the consequent) or extend it, and have ornamental changes.
Small Binary
Part 1 = A – an 8m theme (usually a period or a sentence), may modulate to a subordinate key and/or end with a HC. May include a ‘failed consequent’ – a consequent ending with a HC
Part 2 = B – contrasting middle + continuation, or
contrasting middle + cadential, or
contrasting middle + new consequent (new bi), or
contrasting middle + further dominant prolongation
What does Part II of small binary contain?
Part 2 = B – contrasting middle + continuation, or
contrasting middle + cadential, or
contrasting middle + new consequent (new bi), or
contrasting middle + further dominant prolongation
